Critics Consensus

Its message may prove elusive for some, but with absorbing imagery and a mesmerizing performance from Scarlett Johansson, Under the Skin is a haunting viewing experience.

By envisioning a world where the consumers get consumed, the film calls for a reconceptualization of human and nonhuman relationships. “Under the Skin” denies human exceptionalism and supremacy.

What started off as a potentially feminist film fell into a tired fairytale.

It does not develop a plot so much as a fascinating feeling of underlying horror.

While this film features some interesting themes, it’s also methodical, mundane at times and feels like a bunch of random brushstrokes.

…any film or streaming version of Faber’s novel would take an Avatar-level budget to produce, and the commercial possibilities would be limited, but Glazer’s sole misstep as a director was to create this absurdly truncated version of this alienating tale…

[Director Jonathan] Glazer is less interested in the what and the why than in the texture of the experience, the intensity of the imagery, the sense of adaptation and alienation as this alien starts to connect with her victims.

Mesmeric Performance by Scarlett Johanson. Stunning Visuals. A handful of Eroticas. This trio feature make up for the movie's graphic beauty. But.... character motivation, rationale is zero. Mr. Director never got to show us what became of her last victim. The lead is not human, yeah, nevertheless she portrays desire to be human, especially in her wandering about for shelter. What does she really want from our planet? No clue and Mr. Director loves it that way.

The movie leaves you wondering what happened and makes you ask more questions. For some, this works, because they may love having their own interpretation of the movie. For those who want answers, the movie wont leave you satisfied.
