When bratty 8-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) acts out the night before a family trip to Paris, his mother (Catherine O'Hara) makes him sleep in the attic. After the McCallisters mistakenly leave for the airport without Kevin, he awakens to an empty house and assumes his wish to have no family has come true. But his excitement sours when he realizes that two con men (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern) plan to rob the McCallister residence, and that he alone must protect the family home.

Critics Consensus

Home Alone's uneven but frequently funny premise, stretched unreasonably thin, is buoyed by Macaulay Culkin's cute performance and strong supporting stars.

This is going to be a big hit with the kids. Word will get out in the schoolyard that Home Alone is really funny. Just don’t let the kids near the iron after they’ve seen it.

Home Alone isn't high art, but it's a swell gift to movie-going families.

Using split-second editing, playfully choreographed violence and exaggerated responses such as the bug-eyed double take, director Chris Columbus has created a live action comedy in the style of a Warner Bros cartoon.

This film truly captures something enduring about what it's like to be a kid, and it continues to speak to that child in all of us.

Without being the least bit schmaltzy or cloying, Home Alone manages to impart the holiday spirit. Its saving grace is an unexpected vein of irreverent humor that verges on the black.

The movie is really good! I love it and watch it every year at Christmas. One of the best comedies I've ever seen! Every time it's funny to see how Kevin behaves when he's "home alone".

A classic. Full of nostalgia for those that grew up with it, and yet the premise, the story and the humour still holds strong today. Excellent lead by Macauley Culkin, with an incredible supporting cast. A must see for all the family, or as a throw back to days gone by.

One of the best Christmas movies ever. It captures a beautiful kind of humor that comes straight from what it feels like to be a kid—full of imagination, mischief, and innocence.
